I always knew that I wanted to do something that would help make the world better, and when I became a designer, I actively looked at the different ways I could use my skill and creativity to have a positive impact on the environment.

TURNING A PROBLEM INTO A SOLUTION

Sri Lanka’s growing apparel industry plays a vital role in supporting the country’s economy. However, the large volumes of pre-consumer waste the industry generates, as well as issues in disposing this waste responsibly has created a significant challenge for the sector. Pre-consumer fabric waste is made up of cutting-room waste, end rolls, deadstock (fabric that doesn’t sell) or damaged yardage, and a majority of it ends up in the incinerator or in landfills. This is where I saw my opportunity.

Upcycling has been the model for every item manufactured by House of Lonali from the very beginning. Every single one of our products is created using fabric waste that would otherwise end up polluting the world we live in. At the core of our upcycling model is the principle of circular design. It is about using design to keep resources in circulation, reimagining and reinventing products that are sustainable.
